QNAP TVS-463 Review

QNAP TVS-463 Review

The TVS-463 QNAP has a NAS (Network-Attached Storage) fast which has features worthy of a PC as video playback and virtualization. It is necessary to add disks to it, but you will get a swift storage solution with many advantages. You need a storage space for your files, but you want more features in parallel? QNAP NAS as the TVS-463 (€ 749) combine additional functions within the same solution as the playback of HD video files and pictures in 4K, applications and virtualization capabilities. Although its primary function remains storage, TVS-463 can also perform many tasks that are commonly performed on a PC or server. It is powerful enough to venture online, helped by its proprietary OS and APU AMD Radeon to plan such as night downloads.

Design and features
Its gilded metal case measuring 17.8 x 17.8 x 23.5 cm. Its four disc trays are visible on the front, under a two-line LCD display for notifications. This screen has basic controls to scroll through information about the status of disks or network. The front also has a USB 3.0 port for connecting external disk very quickly on the NAS, and a "Copy" button to duplicate the contents of this disk directly on the TVS-463.

Connectivity options are excellent. There are two Gigabit Ethernet ports on the back, and two HDMI ports and four USB 3.0 ports. These ports greatly facilitate the administration of the NAS. Just connect it to a monitor or HD television screen to access its proprietary operating system locally. The USB 3.0 ports support the connection of two QNAP expansion bays to increase the total storage capacity. Finally, the NAS has a PCI Express (PCIe) to add additional Gigabit ports or 10 Gigabit.

The QNAP QvPC technology combined with QTS user interface allow play media files and run basic office applications like Google Chrome, Firefox and YouTube. A media player can be downloaded to play photos at resolutions up to 4K and 1080p video at maximum. Other applications can also be installed to manage the torrent downloads, listen to online radios, convert video files or access cloud storage services like Dropbox or iDrive. This NAS also provides application virtualization that support it, such as document management, IP telephony, the backup client PCs and security systems. VMs Citrix, VMware and Windows Hyper-V are supported as well. Have advanced computer knowledge will prove useful, because these functions require some manual configuration and updates. A majority of applications are developed and maintained by third parties. The QTS interface provides an easy way to access and install them. Specifically, these functions will not replace your desktop PC or laptop, but the TVS-463 can handle most basic tasks an office or home PC knows perform.

The case is delivered without drive, which helps to limit the purchase and shipping cost (the price of a NAS equipped with high-capacity discs easily exceed € 1000 the base price). This means that your total capacity will depend on the discs you buy to associate the TVS-463. We used four hard drives for NAS Hitachi Deskstar 6TB RAID 5 mode to achieve a total of 16 TB of capacity for our tests, for a total cost of € 1,200 extra. Then simply set in the drawers using the supplied screws and slide the racks in their location. Locks used to secure the drives in their homes. For comparison, other NAS solutions like the QNAP TS-251 or the Western Digital My Cloud DL4100 are not equipped to lock their drawers. Finally, the NAS is equipped with a Kensington security lock slot on the back to attach the NAS to a fixed point of the office.

The configuration of TVS-463 for file management is rather simple, with easy beach access and administration to file shares on Chrome OS clients, Mac OS X and Windows. That said, other functions are less obvious. Given the fact that the NAS is supplied without discs, its monitoring alarms are set with too conservative defaults. And in our tests we received overheating alerts constantly drives, until we contact the technical service of QNAP. Their recommendation was simply to increase the limit to trigger the alarm 10 ° C (however well within the operating range indicated on the characteristics of Hitachi Deskstar hard drives), which allowed us to solve the problem . In conclusion, the TVS-463 is covered by a two year warranty.

Performances
TVS-463 is equipped with a quad-processor AMD heart G range 2.4GHz and integrates a Radeon chip. He is accompanied by 8 GB of RAM (expandable up to 16GB). The processor of the G range is designed for embedded solutions such as NAS, unlike the APU range A which are rather dedicated to desktop PCs. While it may launch some type of PC applications, such as Google Chrome and BitTorrent utilities, it is clearly not as good as a conventional PC. Basic notebook models € 300 are able to convert video files faster than TVS-463, although this is not his vocation. This combined with the fact that this NAS operates on a proprietary operating system does not allow us to set up our Windows usual test protocol. Note that other NAS like the Western Digital DL4100 offers a simple Web interface without additional multimedia capabilities beyond file management and backup.

However, we run our file transfer tests, and the NAS behaved particularly satisfactory. We were able to copy a test file of 4.9 GB with thousands of text documents, audio, photo and video from our Toshiba Tecra Z50 test platform via a router Asus RT-AC68U Dual-band Wireless AC1900 Gigabit, with the both Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 802.11ac on the 5GHz band. Our test file has been written at an average speed of 79 MB / s and read at an average rate of 86 MB / s on the wired Ethernet network. The Western Digital DL4100 proved slower in the same conditions with respectively 69 MB / s and 82 MB / s. By switching to a wireless network, things have slowed considerably, but the TVS-463 remains well ahead (21 MB / s write, 23MB / s read) compared with the DL4100 (10 MB / s write, 12MB / s read).

If you are looking for a fast NAS for SMEs or as an independent worker, able to be configured to perform certain tasks automatically, then the QNAP TVS-463 is an excellent choice. If you like to get your hands dirty to manage software updates, download applications and fine tune the administration functions, this model is for you. Nevertheless, the Western Digital My Cloud DL4100 guard our preference on the NAS segment for SMEs through its key part in hands makes it simpler to administer and install.
